About Us

PC080006Duff Buffalo Ranch was established in 1973 when Richard Duff purchased his first few bison out of a love for our natural heritage as well as an interest and respect for the Native Americans that once roamed the Great Plains. His historical knowledge of the injustices to the Native American tribes and his boyhood ranching background led him to pursue an expanse of acreage that would provide a solace for these magnificent animals and the original people group who depended on bison for their every need. The remembrance of the exploitation of this animal and the native tribes who depended on them has inspired our journey to develop a natural habitat on the very land traveled by the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Kiowa, Sioux and other nomadic tribes who coexisted and traveled with the massive bison herds of yesteryear.

Richard and Susan Duff continue to search out the best and most humane way of nurturing and handling their large herd through holistic managing practices. The combined acreage of privately owned rangeland and scenic state park land account for nearly 4000 acres of well regulated native buffalo grass pastures for our 400 head herd.

After years of experience with these awe-inspiring creatures we have found them to be self-sustaining when placed in an environment that offers the freedom to select primary nutrients from an abundance of rich grazing land and natural resources while drinking from the land’s fresh water sources. Although we are located on the short grass prairie what our buffalo grass lacks in length it makes up for in quality. Our buffalo grass maintains a good protein content even in the middle of the winter.

(with picture) I started raising bison in 1973 out of a love for our natural heritage as well as an interest and respect for the Native Americans that once roamed the Great Plains. Our herd of around 400 bison roam on approximately 3,800 acres of rangeland in Western Kansas. Although we are located on the short grass prairie what our grass lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Our buffalo grass maintains a good protein content even in the middle of the winter.

If you’d like to see where our buffalo roam you can schedule a tour or view the photos on the tours page. If you have any questions feel free to contact us. There are no stupid questions so don’t hesitate to ask. I love bison and enjoy sharing with people of all ages from various locations.
